This ceramic piece presents the difficult reality that even with the most renowned healthcare workers or resources, COVID-19 still took over 15 million lives. I created the vase base with a bowl mold and separately constructed the hands to attach the two pieces after firing. The iron oxide glazed hands give them a laboured appearance, symbolizing the care and effort dedicated to treating ill patients, while the wilting and dead flowers in the vase represent the lives and people who were unable to recover. These lilies are known to symbolize life, and the poor state in which they are presented juxtaposes this concept, despite the vase containing water – one of the nutrients it requires to survive. The concept of the piece being a vase, which is able to keep flowers alive for short amounts of time after they are picked, aligns with how COVID-19 patients were kept alive for as long as possible before passing.
