An apartment complex atop a closed down café in Paris is captured in this work, illustrating the struggles that small businesses faced during the pandemic. The inviting palette and mood of the painting contradicts its intent, exposing the inability to support the many shut-down businesses globally. This is expressed further through the people on their balconies above the shut down coffee shop, eating breakfast and drinking coffee. Despite the proximity of the café, citizens are not able to purchase and keep afloat it because of the isolation laws put in place. In setting this artwork abroad, in France, we in Vancouver, are reminded of the intangibly global scale that this virus affected.
