Growth

Glue and soft pastels on paper
45cm x 60cm

This koi fish illustration was tedious to draw, with every outline being clear glue to separate the pops of pastel colour. I chose to isolate this fish on a blank, black canvas to emphasize a sense of loneliness. I also lightly misted the paper with water to create the wavelike movement cascading outward, imitating the ocean. The natural vibrancy of the koi is meant to demonstrate a sense of evolving and developing self-identity. This piece relates to the self discovery and confidence that I experienced through the isolation of the pandemic. I chose specifically to portray this evolution through a koi fish because of their significance in my Chinese culture. There is a belief that these sea animals can transform into dragons and I resonated with this because of how my journey has only just begun. I believe that I still have lots of time and growth to endure in order to reach my full potential, in dragon form.
