Half the Picture

Digital art
30cm x 30cm

I created this piece digitally on Procreate, experimenting with this software for the first time. Taking advantage of the medium’s ability to fill spaces without brushstrokes, I created a self-portrait with more blocky and bright shapes. My expression in this image appears mostly emotionless, but doing okay, which is what people would likely assume I am feeling. However, in choosing to illustrate just half of my face, the viewer is missing half of the picture. While we put on a brave face during COVID-19’s worst days, it was impossible to tell how people were authentically feeling. Though creating this piece digitally, it connects to the major role that technology had in enduring the pandemic.
